The iPhone Dev Team, creators of the popular iPhone jailbreaking tools PwnageTool (Mac OS X) and redsn0w (cross-platform), have yet to include support for iPhone OS 3.1.2 in their programs, but now there is an alternative for Windows users, blackra1n. blackra1n is a Windows-only jailbreaking program that supports all of the iPhone and iPod touch models. However, only a tethered jailbreak is supported on the third generation iPod touch, meaning that you will have to plug it into your computer and re-run blackra1n to boot it. The jailbreak works for iPhones and iPod touches running iPhone OS 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1 or 3.1.2.
blackra1n is not a carrier unlock and the iPhone Dev Team cautions against using it if you plan to use your iPhone with a different carrier, stating that:
“blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time.”
