Mac OS X v10.6.1 Released: Updates Flash

The first Mac OS X update since Snow Leopard has now been released. The update consists primarily of bug fixes, as did the developer builds released over the couple of weeks.

The 10.6.1 also updates Flash to the latest version, 10.0.32.18. Snow Leopard installed an older version of Flash, 10.0.23.1, even if the user previously had a newer version on his system. That older version of Flash was vulnerable to exploits that had since been patched in later versions and users had to manually update to ensure that their computers were not vulnerable.

A complete list of the changes made by the patch can be found on Apple’s website. If you have not been prompted to update, you can run Software Update manually to get the update.

Motorola Announces New Android Phone: the Motorola Click

motorolaclick.jpgMotorola has announced a new Android-based phone to be released in Q4 2009: the Motorola Click (called Dext outside of the United States) available with T-Mobile.

During its keynote, Motorola focused on the Click’s support for Gmail and various social networks, including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, calling it “the first phone with social skills”. The Click will feature Motoblur which allows you to send messages to all of these social networks at once and will also allow you to receive messages from them. Contacts from these social networks will all be merged into a single address book.

The Click will support 3G and Wi-Fi connections, will include a 5 megapixel camera that can also record video at 24 frames per second and will have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

Motorola also said that it will be releasing more information about another phone that will be available by the 2009 holiday season in the coming weeks. It also announced plans to release additional devices in 2010 that will include Motoblur.

iTunes 9 Disables Palm Pre Syncing

The latest version of iTunes, which was released yesterday, has blocked the Palm Pre from syncing with an iTunes library. The Pre, much to Apple’s consternation, was able to sync with iTunes by posing as an iPod within iTunes. In July, Apple attempted to stop the Pre from syncing in iTunes 8.2.1, but Palm was able to circumvent the patch by identifying itself as an iPod manufactured by Apple, according to PreCentral.

An update to the Pre’s operating system, webOS, was scheduled to be released on 8 September, but has since been delayed. This delay may be due to Palm anticipating the release of iTunes 9 and it is likely that Palm will find a way to circumvent this update before releasing the update.

pandoraandroid.jpgPandora has released an app for the Google’s Android operating system. The app allows you to login and access all of the stations you have created on your computer. It features a home screen widget from which you can control playback and is integrated with the Android’s standard music player. QuickTime Update for Leopard, Tiger and Windows

A QuickTime update has been released for Mac OS X Leopard, Mac OS X Tiger, Windows XP and Windows Vista users. Snow Leopard users are using QuickTime X (10.0) and are therefore unaffected by this update.

The release notes for QuickTime 7.6.4 state that it “includes changes that increase reliability, improve compatibility, and enhance security”. The update also includes support for iTunes 9 and “improved audio device support on Windows Vista”. It patches a vulnerability that could be exploited by a H.264 video file to crash QuickTime or execute code, according to PC World.

If you are using one of the supported operating systems and have not been notified of an update, you can run Software Update manually or download QuickTime 7.6.4 at apple.com/quicktime/download.

Build 10B504 fixes bugs related to Desktop Services that caused Finder to crash and problems with seeing “dyld shared cache” messages in the system log.

Apple “It’s only rock and roll” Event Summary

The Apple event has ended and there were quite a few announcements made.

Steve Jobs: This is the first time that Steve Jobs has spoken at an Apple event since October 2008. While Jobs was not the sole speaker, he did speak for quite some time and told his personal story about getting a liver transplant from a person in his mid-20s who died in a car crash and donated his organs.

iPhone OS: iPhone OS 3.1 for the iPhone and iPod Touch has been released and is available now for download. The update is free for both the iPhone and iPod Touch (with 3.0). Apple put a lot of emphasis on the iPhone and iPod Touch being viable mobile gaming systems, on par with the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS, and announced that Open GL ES 2.0 will be supported in 3.1 for games.

iTunes 9: iTunes 9 has also been released. It allows you to share your purchased songs, music and films on up to five computers. Genius mixes can automatically create playlists with music that goes well together. iTunes LP allows you to get photographs and lyrics along with your music. Films will feature iTunes Extras, similar to extras on DVDs. Apps on the iPhone or iPod Touch can be rearranged in iTunes, instead of having to do it directly on your device. Any one who has tried to do this on the iPhone will welcome this update. There is also has an option to “Share on Facebook” and “Share on Twitter” when looking at an album.

iPod Touch: The price of the 8GB iPod Touch has been reduced to $199, the 32GB to $299 and a new 64GB version of the iPod Touch was announced for $399. There was no mention of a 16GB version. Many expected that new version of the iPod Touch would include a camera, but it does not.

iPod Classic: The iPod Classic has been upgraded to 160GB for the same price of $250.

iPod Shuffle: The iPod Shuffle will be made in several new colors (silver, pink, green, blue). There will be a 2GB model for $59, a 4GB model for $79 and a 4GB model made of stainless steel for $99.

iPod Nano: The new iPod Nano will be available in multiple colors and have a larger 2.2-inch display. It will have a microphone and speaker, VoiceOver and an FM radio. Also, it will include a video camera that can record at 640×480 pixels. It does not, however, have wifi, so you will need to connect it to a computer to upload videos. The 8GB Nano will cost $149 and the 16GB model will cost $179.
