TweetDeck 0.33 Released

A new version of TweetDeck, version 0.33, has been released and adds several new features.

In December 2009, Twitter announced an increase in the API rate limit for applications that were accessing the API using OAuth. TweetDeck has now implemented this approach, which allows it to use 350 calls per hour, up from 150. TweetDeck uses API calls whenever the user’s timeline, mentions, direct messages and lists are updated, so the additional calls that it now has access to means that users can receive these updates more frequently. Along with the increase, TweetDeck can now automatically adjust API call rates to ensure that the user is using all of the available calls each hour, but that he does not run out of them. When this feature is enabled, TweetDeck checks how many API calls are still available before the next reset and adjusts refresh rates accordingly.

0.33 also includes a column navigator that allows the user to quickly jump to a particular column with one click. It also displays what account the column belongs to, the time remaining until the next column refresh and how many API calls are still available until the next reset. This is especially useful for people that have many columns open that require horizontal scrolling to reach, as they can now quickly jump to any column.

The new version allows users to view images from Flickr, Posterous, Mobypicture and Twitgoo from within TweetDeck, a feature that was previously available to a more limited selection of image sites. YouTube videos can also be viewed from within the program.

Existing search columns can now be edited after their creation, something that was previously impossible.

A new support screen is also included, which introduces new users to the program with a series of videos and answers to frequently asked questions. It also tells users if there is a newer version of TweetDeck available. Those who have submitted a support ticket can use the screen to submit full diagnostic information.

Several bug fixes and tweaks are also included.

TweetDeck users should be alerted about the new version soon, but the update can be downloaded manually from tweetdeck.com right now for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

A video has been released highlighting the new features:

Apple May Lower iPad Prices

stevejobsipad.jpgApple executives have told Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope that the company would cut the price of the iPad if demand for the product will not be as high as they would like, reports the Wall Street Journal.

This comes after an already aggressive pricing range that is lower than many speculators anticipated, from $499 for 16GB of memory and no 3G support to $829 for 64GB of memory with 3G support. This would not be the first time that Apple has dropped prices soon after a product was released: it dropped the price of the original iPhone by $200, from $599 to $399, after only two months.

The potential price drop means that those who buy the device early may end up paying quite a bit more than those who wait a couple months. When Apple dropped the price of the iPhone by $200, it offered customers who had already purchased the device $100 in store credit usable at Apple Retail Stores and the Apple Online Store. If it drops the price of the iPad, existing customers may be presented with a similar offer.

Firefox for Mobile Released for Nokia’s Maemo Platform

firefoxlogo.pngFirefox for mobile has been released for Nokia’s Maemo5 Platform, which the Nokia N900 runs on. Mozilla’s goal was to bring the experience that users had on the desktop to the mobile phone, which they accomplished by including many of the features that users have become accustomed to, including the awesome bar, add-on support, location-aware browsing, tabbed browsing and safe browsing. Weave sync support has also been included to allow users to sync Firefox tabs, history, bookmarks and passwords between their desktop and mobile phone. While Firefox add-ons will not work with Firefox for mobile, there are already 64 made-for-mobile addon-ons available on Mozilla’s mobile add-on page.

N900 users can download the browser from firefox.com/mobile. Mozilla is also currently working on versions of the Firefox browser for Windows Mobile and Android. iPhone and BlackBerry users are out of luck though, as there are currently no plans to support those operating systems.

Apple Announces its Tablet: the iPad

ipadannouncement.jpgSteve Jobs has just announced the highly anticipated tablet from Apple, officially called the iPad, at Apple’s event.

Jobs presented the device as being better than a laptop or smartphone for browsing the Web, sharing photos, videos, listening to music, playing games and reading ebooks.

The iPad uses a large on-screen keyboard for typing and incorporates an accelerometer and compass like the iPhone 3GS. It also includes full multi-touch support and includes built-in Google Maps, calendar and address book, as well as a full version of iTunes. It also includes a YouTube app that can view HD video.

iPhone apps can run unmodified on the iPad, either in a pixel for pixel accuracy, which puts in a black box, or in pixel-double mode, which allows it to run in full screen. Even hardware-intensive apps, like games, run well on it unmodified.

Also announced was a new SDK release that includes iPad tools. This will allow developers to make apps that take advantage of the iPad’s large screen.

There were rumors that Apple was talking with newspapers to bring their content to the iPad, and the New York Times was one of the companies demonstrating their native iPad app at the event.

The iBooks app will compete with the Kindle and allow users to buy and read books from Apple’s own online bookstore.

A version of iWork for the iPad has also been made, with each program costing $9.99.

3G wireless data plans will be available from AT&T without a contract in the United States. It will cost $14.99 for 250MB of data per month or $30 for an unlimited plan. Either plan will also get you free access to AT&T’s WiFi hotspots. All models are unlocked, allowing for use of a GSM micro-SIM from any carrier.

It is 0.5 inches thin and weighs 1.5 pounds. It features a 9.7 inch IPS display. It has a 1GHz A4 chip, custom made by Apple, and comes with 16, 32 or 64GB of flash storage. It has 802.11n, WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. Battery life is 10 hours.

The pad can also be plugged into a keyboard dock for extensive typing. Other accessories will also be available.

The price of the device will be:

  • $499 for the 16GB base model;
  • $599 for the 32GB base model;
  • $699 for the 64GB base model;
  • with 3G support costing an extra $130 for each model.

Base models will be shipped in 60 days and 3G models will be shipped in 90 days.

Apple’s website for the iPad is now up at apple.com/ipad.

McGraw-Hill CEO Confirms iPhone OS-Based Apple Tablet

Terry McGraw, the chairman, president and CEO of McGraw-Hill, which publishes textbooks and magazines, appeared on CNBC today to talk about the company’s fourth quarter earnings. When asked if McGraw-Hill would makes its textbooks available for the Apple tablet, McGraw responded:

“Yeah, very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you’re going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.”

While Apple was already expected to announce a tablet at its event tomorrow, there was previously no confirmation of the existence of the device from such a credible, named source. Furthermore, McGraw also confirms that the tablet will run iPhone OS and that it will therefore be compatible with iPhone apps.

The premature confirmation may steal some of Apple’s thunder when it officially announces the device tomorrow, but by this point just about everyone was expecting the announcement anyway.

You can see McGraw’s response for yourself below:

New Google Voice Mobile Site for iPhone and Palm webOS

gvmobileinbox.jpgGoogle has released a new version of its Google Voice mobile site that has just about all of the features you would want in an app. Using the power of HTML5, load times are minimized and the site provides the user with a great interface for checking his inbox, making calls, sending SMS and changing Voice settings.

Despite Apple’s effort to effectively ban Google Voice from the iPhone by removing all Voice apps from the App Store in July 2009, Google has maintained that it will get Voice on the iPhone. This was initially accomplished by the release of Voice’s first mobile website which was an improvement over the call-in menu, but was not as polished as the apps that were removed. Since then, iPhone users who did not grab a Voice app before the ban are only able to use the mobile site, the basic call-in menu or an app from an alternative app store, such as Cydia, which required a jailbroken phone. This latest iteration of the Voice mobile page includes all of the functionality of the banned apps while being available for all iPhones users.

The website cannot, however, access the iPhone or webOS phone’s phonebook and instead uses the contacts from the Google account. Contacts can easily be imported though, from either CSV or vCard format.

iPhone and webOS users can visit http://m.google.com/voice to use the mobile site. Google Voice is still invite-only, so those without accounts will need to request an invite.

Google has released a video demonstrating the site:

Google Reader Can Now Track Changes on Webpages Without Feeds

The Google Reader team has released a new feature: the ability to track changes on webpages even if they lack a feed. Reader will now create a custom feed for these pages and will notify you when changes are made. For example, you can view the changes to the NYU Computer Science Department homepage by using a custom feed in Reader.

To create a custom feed, use the “Add a subscription” button and enter the URL of the webpage you want to track. If a proper feed is not found, Reader will periodically check the page and notify you of any changes. A short snippet of the change is provided to help you determine if you would like to revisit the page.

The service currently only works on pages in English. It also does not detect updates that are made to content in frames or that require a user to sign in. Instructions have been provided for site owners that would like to opt out.

Apple Releases Q1 2010 Financial Results; Major New Product Confirmed

appleq12010.pngApple released its financial results for first quarter 2010, which began on 26 September 2009 and ended on 26 December 2009. Revenue was $15.68 billion and net quarterly profit was $3.38 billion for the period, compared to revenue of $11.88 billion and net quarterly profit of $2.26 in Q1 2009. Apple generated $5.8 billion in cash during the quarter, according to Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, who expects revenue in Q2 2010 to drop to the $11.0 billion to $11.4 billion range. Steve Jobs notes that “Apple is now a $50+ billion company”.

Apple adopted new accounting standards this quarter, changing how revenue is recognized for certain items, particularly sales of iPhones and Apple TVs. Under the old principles, Apple accounted for the sales of these items using subscription accounting, which required it to recognize revenue from them over the products’ estimated economic lives. Under the new principles, Apple can account for largely all of the revenue from iPhones and Apple TVs when the products are sold.

Sales of both computers and iPhones were up, with the company selling 3.36 million Macs during the period, a 33 percent increase over Q1 2009, and 8.7 million iPhones, a 100 percent increase over Q1 2009. Sales of iPods were, however, down year-over-year, with 21 million being sold, an 8 percent decrease from Q1 2009.

Perhaps most interesting is that Steve Jobs all but confirmed the existence and announcement of an Apple tablet at the company’s event on Wednesday in his statement that “new products [Apple is] planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product…” Other new products are rumored to include a new iPhone model, as well as Apple’s routine upgrades to the hardware in its computers.

Apple Tablet Use Spotted

Flurry Analytics, which provides analytics tools to mobile app developers, has spotted the use of about 50 devices that seem to fit the characteristics of an Apple tablet. Flurry first noticed the device in September 2009, but says that it has been seen more frequently in the past month and that all of the devices are being used on Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California.

One of the hotly debated aspects of the yet-to-be-announced device is the operating system that it will run. Some have suggested that it will run a full version of Mac OS X, while others have held that it will run iPhone OS and still others believe that it will run something in the middle. The devices that Flurry has witnessed are running iPhone apps, which is how they were able to identify them in the first place, which lends credence to the idea that the device will run iPhone OS or at least be compatible with it. Even more telling is that the devices are running OS 3.2, which is not far off from the current iPhone OS version number of 3.1.2. Flurry also notes Apple’s tendency to release operating system updates just before hardware releases.

Flurry has observed the use of 200 apps on the devices, which it has categorized and graphed:

appletabletappusage.jpg

Interestingly, Apple is focusing on testing gaming apps on the device, with entertainment and news & books also receiving attention. The heavy focus on news and books is in line with rumors that Apple has been talking with newspaper and book publishers about featuring their content on the tablet. However, comparatively little testing is being done in other areas, such as music and social networking.

Apple is expected to officially announce the device during its event on Wednesday, 27 January and begin shipping it in March.

Apple to Announce Q1 2010 Results Today

appleq12010.pngApple will be announcing its financial results for quarter 1 2010, which began on 26 September 2009 and ended on 26 December 2009, today at 2 p.m. PST (22.00 UTC) via a conference call webcast. To listen in all you need is QuickTime.

Apple warns “that comments made during this call may include forward-looking statements that are subject to risks and uncertainties…” Maybe we will hear mention of the rumored Apple tablet, but that will most likely have wait until Apple’s big event on Wednesday.
